Migration From Dorset database now online

It is believed that in the 19th century as many as 100,000 people moved away from Dorset. Discovering why – now that's the challenge!

We are building the Migration from Dorset database, a 'unique to England' project. Records are being compiled of people who moved from Dorset to other counties or overseas from the 1600s to 1930. We currently have over 12,000 records, and are constantly adding more. To search the database and view records click here...

The 17th, 18th and 19th centuries saw great economic, political and social changes in Dorset. Migrants followed jobs, opportunities and challenges. People were sad to leave family and friends yet excited at the prospect of a new and possibly better life.

We need your help to expand the records that chart these movements. If you know of anyone who moved away, entering their details through our online form would be much appreciated.
