In 2001 a group of local and family history enthusiasts set up the West Dorset Research Centre in Bridport, Dorset. Work on the local rope and net industry and hemp and flax production led to an interest in migration from Dorset. This has developed into a long-term project called the Dorset Migration Index. During our researches for these projects members discovered a wide variety of information sources which they felt could be useful to others. And thus the idea of Parish Packs was born!

These Packs are not designed to be comprehensive chronological histories of particular places. Nor do the items need to be read in the order in which they are presented. Rather the packs are collections of miscellaneous information and illustrations, gathered from a variety of sources, that can be dipped into as the reader wishes. The WDRC hopes that the Packs will be of interest to residents, newcomers, visitors, family historians, local historians and anyone as curious about West Dorset and its past as we are. They may be a starting point for your own research into other aspects of your parish. If any reader is inspired to embark on Dorset research that could be produced as part of our Parish Pack project, we would be delighted to hear from you.

The West Dorset Research Centre, manned entirely by volunteers, provides research and information services, together with exhibitions, training seminars and talks which are available to members of the public. The Research Centre responds to enquiries from all over the world about migration, local and family history. The Centre also collects information about the migration of people from Dorset which it gathers together on its website. More entries are always valued - these can be submitted through our online form.
